CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Waukegan Fire Department is resuming its search this afternoon for a 16-year-old boy who disappeared in the lake Friday afternoon after he went in to save another 16-year-old.

Most of the weekend, the waves on the lake were too high, but Waukegan Fire Marshal Steven Lenzi said now they're able to resume recovery operations.

"The lake conditions have calmed enough to allow us to make entry with some sonar equipment," he said. "But then we are faced with yet another hazard in that our harbor has frozen over.  So we are not able to launch any kind of regular boat operations.

"We were able to special request an airboat from the Wonder Lake Fire Department."

Lenzi said if the sonar on the airboat spots an image, then Waukegan Fire Department divers will go in.

He said the first boy who went into the lake was taken to a hospital Friday night -- and was then transferred to another facility.
