CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you have any opioid drug, or other prescriptions, sitting unwanted in your medicine chest, it's a great day to get rid of them. Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Although he said the road to addiction is often paved with a friend, loved one or neighbor's unneeded prescription drugs, Northwestern Memorial Hospital surgeon Dr. Jonah Stulburg said flushing them down the toilet is not the best idea.

Instead, he prefers organized events such as those scheduled this weekend, because the collected prescriptions can then be destroyed en masse, which he says is better for the environment.

This event is sponsored nationally by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and occurs twice a year, but many hospitals and police stations have secure kiosks into which you can dispose unneeded pills any time.
