Runners Take Off At Midway Airport Charity Run

September 16, 2018 - 11:07 am

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Most people running at Midway are trying to catch a flight but today hundreds ran outside the airport.

Organizers say the 6th annual Midway Fly Away 5k attracted about 700 runners and walkers who were able to run on a road on the edge the airfield as planes took off.

While most people wore athletic clothes, a pilot chose to run in uniform.

Runners talked about how interesting it was to run at the airport and how loud the planes were.

Carmen didn't really notice.  She walked over to the event with her family from her home nearby and says she considers the noise like birds chirping or other background sounds.

The charity run included a one mile run for kids.

Proceeds go to Special Olympics Chicago, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
