CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- 5G technology and the promise of greater speed is within our grasp, but a Canadian professor who's studied the health effects of electromagnetic radiation says not so fast.

WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller reports.

The man who testified before the Illinois House Committee on Information Technology Thursday may be an outlier. Many studies have said 5G technology is safe.

But Dr. Paul Heroux, who's on the medical faculty at McGill University in Montreal, said 5G will bring health risks.

"We're facing an increase incidence of chronic diseases: diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's that will occur faster and in larger numbers of people,” he said.

"And these diseases are very expensive for the health care system."

Dr. Heroux said he wants businesses to have an optical fiber connection so that they won't rely on wireless as much.

"It will have a tendency to clear the atmosphere of this deleterious radiation,” he said.

Anti-5G groups paid for Heroux to come to Chicago to testify.
