CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some politicians are calling for the shutdown of a Willowbrook medical facility over concerns about possible cancer-causing emissions.

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin and State Senator John Curran have written a letter to the Illinois attorney general to shutter Sterigenics amid a review.

The request cites a federal study that found higher cancer risks from ethylene oxide emissions a year after the Illinois EPA issued an air permit.

Cronin says until there's been a study of the emissions' impact, Sterigenic's facility should be closed.

Earlier this week Sterigenics said it exceeds EPA requirements and voluntarily upgraded its equipment recently.

A spokesman for the company did not have a comment on the letter.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office says they've been following the issue closely and look forward to responding.
