CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -With the nationwide demonstration less than a week away, local organizers of the March For Our Lives are getting volunteers ready.

Organizer Emerson Toomey said preparation for next Saturday's march and rally starts with safety training.

"The purpose is to help educate people and help make them feel prepared for the march," she said.

The training is being led by activist Shani Smith.

"She was the trainer for the Women's March a few months ago," Toomey said. "So it's the same training program."

Volunteers will also be advised on what to do if they are faced with counter-protestors during the march, which will get started at Union Park at 11 a.m.

Toomey said it will honor those affected by the Parkland, FL, shooting, but it also takes on local meaning.

"We're also trying to raise awareness about the gun violence that happens disproportionately on the south and west sides," Toomey said. "All of our speakers are under the age of 21 and most of them are representative of these places. They're going to speak about their personal experiences with gun violence in their communities."

Over 9,000 people say they are going to the event, according to its Facebook page.
