CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Dozens of dogs came out for the annual blessing of the animals at a church in Chicago's Printers Row this morning.

There was some barking but the dogs gathered in the park across the street from Grace Episcopal Church were mostly well behaved.

Reverend Amity Carrubba says the outdoor service a great way to invite neighbors to participate and it makes sense for people to bring their pets, as many consider them an integral part of their family.

Standing towards the back was Fern whose owner says the Great Pyrenees mix is already a better dog after receiving the blessing.

In addition to the couple dozen dogs there were also two Chicago police horses and a turtle that were blessed.

The event is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
