CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For 50 years, the Old Town School of Folk Music has had classes at its historic building at 909 West Armitage. Now that building is for sale - and there's a move to stop the sale with a petition drive.

Since Old Town School teacher Lindsay Weinberg found out the building was for sale, she said she's been having a series of what feel like break-up conversations with her students. Students who she thinks may not be able to make it to classes at the Lincoln Square buildings or other school facilities.

"It's an emotional thing because everyone is passionate about this place," she said. "There is so much heart in this place."

Bau Graves is executive director of the non-profit. He said the move will help better suit the school for future vitality.

"I think that it is on my shoulders to be communicating more effectively to teachers and students in the Old Town School community why this is a decision they should embrace rather than reject," he said. "Because it is greatly to our long term survival as an institution."

Graves said money from the sale will start an endowment fund for the school, a fund he hopes will be worth about $10 million or more in a few years.
