CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Centro De Informacion is a social service agency headquartered in Elgin serving the Hispanic community with a focus on people who are new to the area.

"They come to us for help.  Whether its housing, whether its employment, whether its a legal problem we are here to help," said Executive Director Jaime Garcia.

"We also help with immigration. We are accredited by the Department of Justice to provide immigration counseling."

The agency stocks an emergency food pantry, conducts health fairs and screenings, holds parenting classes and seminars and can help with translation.

"Sometimes people will come in with a piece of mail and they will say they can't read or write in English and can you please help me here," Garcia said.

Last year, Garcia said, Centro De Informacion served more than 13,000 clients at its three locations in Elgin, East Dundee and Hanover Park.  The agency has been offering assistance for more than 45 years.

"Back then it was very different. There were no governmental offices, retail stores, banks that had bilingual personnel," he said. "So a need arose and that's how Centro De Informacion got started."

Garcia says Centro De Informacion mission statement sums up their commitment to serving the growing Hispanic community in the northwest suburbs and all residents who are new to the area.

"Empowering Hispanics with the ability to effectively integrate into our greater community through the facilitation of information, education, citizenship and well being -- that's our goal," Garcia said.
