CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The south terminal at the 95th Street Red Line Station is open, with Mayor Rahm Emanuel on hand Sunday to cut the ribbon.

The mayor says the renovations are bringing much needed improvements to one of the busiest CTA stations and lays the groundwork for an extension of the Red Line south to 130th Street.

"This is not the end point," Emanuel said. This is a milestone on the road to 130th Street to get the extension. It would be crazy to build something when the other thing was breaking and falling apart and we're spending too much money to maintain it rather than invest in it."

Improvements include heated shelters, a bridge between the north and south terminals and wider bus lanes to ease congestion.

The north terminal is scheduled to open later this year.
