CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A report finds arrests for meth use have increased significantly in Illinois in recent years.

Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority researcher Lauren Weisner says the number of meth-related arrests nearly tripled in Illinois from 2010 through 2017.

Weisner says there are a couple of reasons why meth use has been on the rise. She says meth has become cheaper and purer in recent years, at the same time that access to opioid prescriptions has decreased.

While arrest rates for meth use are higher in central and southern Illinois, the report found McHenry County also had a high meth arrest rate.

Weisner says more meth is coming from Mexico, rather than being made locally.

Weisner also says more research is needed into treatments to help meth users break their addictions, just as there are treatments available to help opioid addicts.
