CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A longtime florist company has been smelling great and putting smiles on people’s faces for 75 years. WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya visited Steuber Florist and Greenhouse in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood for this week's Made in Chicago.

"My grandfather bought it in 1943 and it was an existing flower shop at that time, or greenhouse," said owner Scot Steuber. "I think it was more greenhouse than flower shop."

Back then, cemetery business was Steuber's main focus.

"The streetcar would come down here. There were very little houses and it was just the cemeteries here on the South Side," he said.

Now, Steuber is a full-service florist that handles weddings, funerals, holidays and everyday occasions.

In the greenhouse are thousands of poinsettia plants. Steuber said the 70-degree greenhouse helps the plants grow and gets an even stronger burst of warmth when the sun shines. Steuber said in the summer, it can get up to 120 degrees in the greenhouse.

"Right now, we’re trying to force the poinsettias into bloom," he said.

Stueber Florist and Greenhouse in Mt. Greenwood is a family business that has been around since 1943.

The business is all about family. One employee, Melanie Petoske, has worked there for 27 years. Steuber’s sister, Laura Doody, also works there and his father, Bernie Steuber, still comes around most days.

"This is his baby," Steuber said of his father. "It's really what’s keeping him going. He’s 84 years old and he’s logging more hours than me, probably."

Steuber Florist and Greenhouse is located on 111th and Washtenaw in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
