CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Inside a West Chicago warehouse, Marcus Contaldo and Jenni Trilik-Contaldo are brewing more than a mean cup of joe.

"You just connect with people on a whole different level with coffee," Marcus said. "You're a part of their ritual every day."

The couple got their speciality coffee fix at a local farmer's market. When it came to an end, they decided to buy a coffee roaster and start making their own.

"One day, we found one on Craigslist," Jenni said. "Marcus was like 'I found one' and I was like 'let's just do it, why not?'"

"The taste is smoother and brighter," Marcus said. "More complex."

In 2013, they launched Modest Coffee Roasters.

"It just kind of grew out of this idea of making really high quality, speciality coffee more accessible to people. So we sell it online and we sell it locally at a lot of independent grocery stores and chains in the Chicagoland area," Marcus said.

It's become a full time job for the couple, with orders and subscriptions coming in from around the globe.

"We're still just as passionate about coffee as we were when we started," Jenni said. "I don't feel like we've lost any of our steam. I think it's really cool that it's growing and that we're sharing with people."

Their recipe for success is simple: connection making and hard work.

"You have to be really comfortable with being uncomfortable."
