Chicago Mayoral Candidate La Shawn Ford said police districts can help reduce violent crime in the neighborhoods by expanding their mission.

Ford, a state representative, said that if he were mayor, he would make sure police districts were more than places where officers are dispatched and suspects are taken into custody. He said the facilities should become resource centers, because people may have committed crimes because of mental health or substance abuse problems.

Ford added that one key to reducing violent crime is ensuring that every neighborhood has access to a quality education. But, he said, it would also be good for police district headquarters to become a type of community center to provide alternatives to jail for people who have run-ins with officers. He suggested that perhaps counselors could be available, and referrals.

Mayoral candidate La Shawn Ford is the guest on our AT ISSUE program this weekend, and you can hear more of his thoughts Sunday at 9:30 am and 9:30 pm.
