How Runners Are Prepping For The Chicago Marathon

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After months of training, the Chicago Marathon is a week away for thousands of runners.

One of the directors of the medical tent at the end of the race encourages runners not to change their race clothing or food choices in the days before the big race.

Dr. Carrie Jaworski said "we see people getting into trouble when they decide to try a new thing in that final phase of their training."

Runners should have figured out by now how much water to drink and when they'll need to use the bathroom along the course.

She says if you feel major pain during the race - don't ignore it just because you've worked so hard to prepare for the marathon.

Dr. Jaworski said while working at a marathon in another city, a runner wanted to continue with the race after being resuscitated from cardiac arrest. The medical team did not allow that to happen.

She encourages runners now to book a post-race massage, saying you've not only earned it you'll probably need it to be able to walk around.
