CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- June is dog flu awareness month as veterinarians seek to warn dog owners of the dangers of the virus.

“Dog flus is a highly infectious canine cough,” said Dr. David Gonsky with West Loop Veterinary Care in Chicago. He said not only is it infectious, it's hard for a pet owner to know there's a problem.

“A dog can be infected for two days before showing signs,” he said. “In that time, they can go to a dog park, day care, a vet. And, after they’re infected, dogs can spread it for up to three weeks.”

There was a dog flu outbreak in Chicago in 2015. Gonsky said they stopped it the old fashioned way.

“So what we did is we just tried to get people to stay away from each other and from social places for a period of time so it could flame out,” he said.

Gonsky says that outbreak led to the development of a dog flu vaccine.
