High Waves, Hazardous Currents Expected At Area Beaches

September 22, 2018 - 1:41 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The National Weather Service is warning beachgoers across Cook County to stay out of the water until at least 7 p.m. Saturday night.

Life-threatening waves and dangerous swimming conditions are expected. Waves heights will reach 4 to 7 feet and will subside to 3 to 6 feet sometime Saturday afternoon.

Both strong rip currents and structural currents are anticipated, as well.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water that sweep people away from shore and into deep water. They usually form in low spots and breaks in sandbars.

Structural currents sweep swimmers into deep water along a pier structure. They form where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure, according to the National Weather Service.
