CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In Houston, former First Lady Barbara Bush is being kept comfortable and has refused any additional medical treatment.

One of her Illinois political friends, former Governor Jim Edgar is talking about her Monday.

Edgar said he first got to know Bush when he was Illinois Secretary of State and also held the title of State Librarian. When her husband was vice president, Bush started a program on adult literacy.

Edgar called Bush, aged 92, a great woman and probably the top person he’s ever known in politics. "Very down-to-earth," he said.

Edgar also said "she was very protective of her family. She was a mother bear and if somebody would attack one of her cubs or her mate, she would let you know that she wasn’t going to put up with that."

Edgar called Bush the ideal First Lady. She was someone who kept thoughts to herself publicly, but likely let her husband, President George H.W. Bush, know what she thought at times.

He said he hopes "that she’s as comfortable as can be because she’s lived quite a life. She’s done a lot of good things for a lot of people."
