Durbin Supports Syrian Airstrikes

April 16, 2018 - 7:44 am

SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After touring medical research facilities in Springfield, Sen. Dick Durbin said he supports the President Donald Trump's decision to launch airstrikes against Syria.

“I think it was especially wise of him to enlist Great Britain and France as our allies in this effort and I hope it does send a message to Assad," Durbin said, referencing the embattled leader of the Syrian government. "But make no mistake, it is no guarantee we have seen the last of assad’s chemical weapons.”

The U.S.-led airstrikes were announced on Friday after Trump gave indications last week that he would respond to Syria's use of chemical weapons against its citizens. The most recent use of chemical weapons by Syrian forces resulted in the deaths of 40 civilians, according to reports.

Durbin said with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars still going on, we need a national discussion over war policy and maybe next time authorization from Congress.
