CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police say drinking and hiking don't go well together.

Four hikers have been cited for allegedly hiking drunk Wednesday off of the marked paths at Starved Rock State Park, near Utica, one of whom smashed her head when falling backward.

The first call of a woman with a gash to her head at the bottom of Wildcat Canyon drew a response that was quick and comprehensive. Conservation Police Captain William Wire found belligerent drunks, a woman bloodied when she fell backward and hit a sharp-edged boulder and all four in their group off of the marked paths.

"They were standing and just from what I see, there was a stump near by and they were just intoxicated and fell backwards just standing. They were not climbing or anything like that," he said.

Wire said two of the hikers became belligerent, one of whom asked after he was subdued if he was in Florida.  The woman whose gashed head was the initial focus of the search blacked out twice as she was transported to a waiting medical chopper.

In all, Wire said, eight citations were issued to the hikers, who were treated at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru, Ill.
