CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The funeral for a veteran Chicago Fire Department diver who died during a rescue attempt on the Chicago River on Memorial Day is Monday afternoon. Many people chose to pay their final respects Sunday during his visitation at the St. Rita High School Chapel.

The mourners included firefighters from across the city and other communities, politicians, friends, family and people who never knew Juan Bucio, but wanted to pay tribute to his life and service.

Lieutenant Mark Kolb, a Chicago fire paramedic, was one of them. He says when you put your life on the line, Bucio was one of the people you wanted at your side.

"It's always comforting to know you have a true professional on board with you," Kolb said. "That means you can rely on the guy next to you if youre in trouble. He's going to come to your aid."

Bucio died on Memorial Day while searching for Alberto Lopez, who fell out of a boat into the Chicago River near Ashland Avenue. Lopez's body was found on Friday by friends about a half-mile from where he fell in the river.
