CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Several hundred people kicked off their Veterans’ Day weekend packing food kits for veterans in need. They prepared the kits at the Allstate Arena for distribution throughout the Chicago area.

The Chicago Wolves provided the arena’s Skyline Room and tickets for the volunteers. The food packed by Bill Kanatas’ 'Feed 6' volunteers came from the Northern Illinois Food Bank, which will assist with distribution.

The pasta-based meals were mixed at the Allstate Arena, and will be good for two years. The reality, Kanatas said, is that most of the 60-thousand meals will be eaten before Thanksgiving. The first truckload of 14,000 meals was dispatched before noon Saturday to the Jesse Brown VA Center on Chicago’s West Side.
