CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thousands of Chicago police officers marched past the Gold Star Families Memorial this morning to honor their fallen colleagues.

This year's St. Jude March comes less than three months after the department laid to rest Commander Paul Bauer, who was fatally shot trying to arrest a suspect in front of the Thompson Center.

Officer Adam Jaurigue says hearing the Emerald Society's bagpipes and drums always touches his heart.

“Those drums get to me every time. I hear drums like that and it hits me right here,” he said.

Police Chaplain Father Dan Brandt read the roll call for 23 officers who died in the last year, including Bauer.

His widow and daughter sat with other members of the Gold Star Families, holding yellow roses.

Bauer's name - along with the names of two officers who died from injuries they sustained on the job years ago - were added to the memorial wall last month.
