CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you're looking to learn how to swim, there's a chance to be a part of history in Chicago on Thursday night.

The World's Largest Swimming Lesson will be offered at 76 Chicago Park District pools on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

Manager of Beaches and Pools Eric Fischer said Chicago is among several U.S. cities and dozens of countries participating in the effort to break a world record.

"They'll be doing lessons in China, in Australia, in England and Spain, so it is kind of cool that it is being done all over the planet at the same time," he said.

Organizers said more than 41,000 kids and adults in 26 countries set the record last year. Of those, about 1,500 swimmers were in Chicago Park District pools.

The event draws attention to how swim lessons can save lives in cutting the risk of drowning by 88 percent among kids ages one to four.

The park district offers lessons at all levels from babies to seniors, with a new session starting next week.
