CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago has launched an international competition to determine who will design the future of O'Hare.

Chicago Aviation Commissioner Ginger Evans has announced a competition open to designers around the world to submit their ideas for a new Global Terminal and other enhancements planned for O'Hare over the next eight years.

"The architecture world has been waiting for this...for some months so we wanted to make sure that they had plenty of advanced notice of the timing so that they could make plans to be here for the presubmittal conference," Evans said.

The O'Hare 21 project has an estimated $8.7 billion price tag. Evans said when the project's completed in 2026, O'Hare will become the world leader when it comes to airport amenities, especially for international passengers.
