CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago police officer shot a man in the leg Tuesday when he "came at them" with a knife, after they had used a Taser on him twice.

Chicago Police Area Central Deputy Chief Kevin Ryan said  officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from 2836 S. Throop about a man with a knife.

Ryan said police found the man on the second floor of the home, in a bedroom. He had a large cleaver and was cutting himself.

Officers asked the man to drop the knife, but he did not obey.  Officers used Tasers — twice — and they had "minimal effect,” Ryan said.

Ryan said the man "came out of the room at them."  He says an officer fired one round and hit the man in the leg.

Police say the man was taken to Stroger Hospital and was stable.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.

The officer is on paid leave for 30 days.
