CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Architects and developers from around the world will gather in Chicago at the end of the month to talk about more efficient skyscrapers.

The 2018 Tall and Urban Innovation Conference will look at ways to make tall buildings more sustainable. James Goettsch is the CEO of the Chicago-based architectural firm Goettsch Partners. He said in Chicago, sustainable buildings are increasingly gaining popularity among prospective tenants.

"As the technology has evolved, it makes the older buildings less useful and less valuable," Goettsch said.

He said while sustainable and more efficient buildings are more expensive to construct, they can be far less expensive to operate.

"So despite the fact that there might be a high vacancy rate in the office buildings, the new buildings are in high demand," Goettsch said.

One of the buildings Goettsch's firm designed, 150 North Riverside, has been nominated by organizers of the conference as the best tall building in the Americas.
