CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Gun-related crimes remain on the decline in Chicago, while the number of carjacking arrests soar.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said there was a 100 percent increase in carjacking arrests in Chicago in April compared to a year ago.

"We have a lot of juvenile offenders that commit these crimes. The penalties for them are just not keeping up with the fact that they are doing these carjackings," Johnson said.

Johnson tells CBS 2 he wants stiffer sentences for carjackers.

Chicago police crime statistics from April show it was the 14th straight month that gun violence declined in the city.

There was also a decline in major crimes of all categories.
