CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Improvements are expected soon that will make Logan Boulevard a safer place to drive, walk and bike. Two groups with different ideas each claim to have overwhelming support of area residents.

The split involves the placement of bike lanes. The Active Transportation Alliance says it has support for reserved bike lanes that would take a lane or two of four-lane Logan Boulevard under the Kennedy Expressway to Western Avenue.

But Logan Square Preservation’s Steve Niketopoulos says that’s not what a weekend poll of 800 nearby residents found that 554 of the 800 polled objected to any reduction in car lanes and says that was the case eight months ago when the Alliance first approached his group.

Niketopoulos says rearranging sidewalks works better and wants area aldermen to recognize the disagreement before any actual planning is done.

The two sides faced off in low-key disagreement at a news conference Tuesday called by the Alliance to tout support for its plan. Niketopoulos says Logan Square Preservation and the Alliance concur on other points.
