CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Memorial Day weekend will be the first time on patrol for dozens of new Chicago police officers.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said 125 new officers are hitting the streets this holiday weekend.

"It is part of the hiring strategy that will add nearly 1,000 new police officers to the department at the completion of this effort," he said.

"Year-to-date we are seeing a 26-percent average reduction in gun violence in the districts that are equipped with this new technology, helping to drive a citywide reduction of nearly 22-percent compared to the same time last year.".

Mayor Emanuel said the city plans to add around 100 new officers a month, until the goal of around a 1,000 is met.
