10-Year-Old Boy Offers Tokens Of Thanks To Police

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Liam Bates started his mission to give gifts to police in all 50 states about a year ago.

He and his father bought 10 St. Michael coins, and gave five to friends who were in law enforcement, and another five to random officers. It would be a good way for Liam, 10, to learn that he can approach police without fear, his father said.

Liam’s small effort grew into a nonprofit, and it now offers custom thank-you cards along with the coin that bears a benediction he wrote: “May your shifts be safe and may you go home to your family every night.”

He and his father, who are from Cottage Grove, Wisc., dropped by the Chicago Police Department Headquarters on March 30 to offer the gifts there.

Donations make it possible for Liam to continue his mission. He has 44 states left to go.
