WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois State Police say one National Guardsman was killed, another badly injured Sunday when an Illinois National Guard military vehicle lost control and crashed outside Rockford.

About 11 a.m., the military vehicle was going east on I-90 in Winnebago County at mile marker 10, near Rock Cut State Park, when it crashed, police said.

State Police Master Sgt. Nizar Hasan said preliminary information indicates the National Guard Humvee may have been moving into the same lane as a red SUV or pick-up truck when the driver of the Humvee possibly over-corrected and the Humvee went down a 50-foot ravine and rolled over.

Master Sgt. Hasan said the Humvee had been part of a convoy headed back to the Army National Guard Armory at 55th and Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago following drill duty at Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin.

A 30-year old Guardsman was killed. The 20-year old member of the Guard with him was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Rockford in critical condition. Lanes on I-90 were closed during an investigation.

The coroner did not immediately confirm the death.
