CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker has signed a law barring employers from asking job applicants to disclose their past salaries, something small business say will hurt them.

In just two months, it will be illegal for employers to ask job applicants for their salary history. Proponents say the new law will be especially helpful to women.

Wendy Pollack, women’s law and policy director for the Shriver Center, said women in Illinois earn just 79 cents for every dollar that white men earn. Black women earn just 63 cents, she said.

The National Federation of Independent Businesses said the law will hurt small businesses. Lawmakers disagree.
