(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some neighbors in River Forest are hosting a fundraiser on their block to find a positive way to mark the anniversary of Sept. 11.

It’s the annual LemonAid fundraiser for local charities run by children and teens who live on Bonnie Brae Place. Parents and adult neighbors help out.

Organizer Patty Henek said the fundraiser has grown from humble beginnings when the first LemonAid was held to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Since 2002, she said, the event has raised about $290,000 for charities serving children and families.

In the past couple of years, the amount raised at LemonAid hasn’t matched the $40,000 peak of a couple of years ago.

But Henek said they hope to at least match that mark in 2019.
