NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Naperville police sergeant is being hailed as a hero after he recently rescued a small boy who was running obliviously alongside traffic on Illinois Route 59.

In a Facebook posting Monday, the Naperville Police Department said the youngster, who appears to be a toddler, “escaped his mother’s watchful eye” and left his house.

Sgt. Anthony Mannino was in a squad unit and observed the boy running alongside busy Route 59. Traffic whooshed by the child, in dashcam video police posted on social media.

The sergeant called in the incident and parked his squad unit in the right hand lane as a barrier against oncoming traffic, police said.  Mannino can be seen running after the child on foot; he catches up with him, picks him up and talks soothingly to the child.

The incident occurred last month. The sergeant received his department’s Life Saving Award last week for his actions.

No one was hurt.
