CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Violence in Gary, Indiana claimed more lives last year than in each of the 11 years before.

And the Northwest Indiana Times also reported that of the 58 murders recorded in 2019, police think 12 were gang-related and 14 were likely drug-related. Domestic homicides jumped more than 85 percent in 2019 compared to a year earlier.

Gary Police Commander Jack Hamady told the paper that gang-related cases are some of the most difficult to solve because witnesses are unwilling to come forward.

He also said the department reorganized its drug unit last year and Gary's new police chief will be looking to increase the unit’s funding, possibly through the use of forfeiture and seizure money and strengthen partnerships with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
