GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Prosecutors in Northwest Indiana have filed charges against the mother of two children killed in an apartment fire in Gary over the weekend.

Kristen Gober is facing neglect and drug charges. Authorities say the 33-year-old left her three children alone in the Lakeshore Dunes apartment on Sunday morning.

"She was gone from the apartment for a number of hours," said Lake County Prosecuting Attorney Bernard Carter. "She was in another apartment, drinking excessively. It appears that the two younger children were playing with a blanket in the kitchen area. It ignited from the stove."

Two-year-old Kailani Gober and her four-year-old brother, Khristopher, died of burns and smoke inhalation, while a third child was able to escape.

Carter said it appears Gober ran from the building without telling anyone that her children were trapped inside. Police later found her at a nearby McDonald's.

"It's less than half a mile away," Carter said. "She gave a statement, saying she tried to get into the apartment and help, but that is in conflict with what we believe is a person who has given us information that we believe to be extremely truthful."
