(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Thursday she sincerely wants U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz to visit Chicago to see the problems of gun violence first-hand, but that didn’t stop her from taking another swipe at the Republican from Texas.

Cruz and Lightfoot have engaged in a war of words over social media after the senator criticized Chicago for failing to enforce what he considers strict gun laws.

This week, Cruz told the Sun-Times he’d be happy to come to Chicago, but given the tone of Lightfoot’s invitation he’s not sure it wouldn’t just be a political show.

Asked about that Thursday, the mayor fired back: “It’s ironic that a guy like Ted Cruz talks about a political stunt. He’s a master of political stunts. My invitation to him to Chicago was sincere. I think it’s not ever a good idea to cast aspersions on a community, particularly one as rich and diverse as the city of Chicago, without knowing any facts."
