CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This time, the wailing emergency response sirens were the sounds of hope and joy, as fire trucks and police cars served as escourts to Metra's North Pole Express.

The North Pole Express is part of Metra's "Operation: North Pole," a Christmas-themed train that gives sick kids some holiday cheer. This year's train ran through the suburbs Saturday, with a stop in Rosemont.

Lindsey Gambini brought two sons, one of whom has a 1-in-10-million autoimmune disorder.

"It's amazing," she said. "There absolutely wonderful people who are giving us nothing but love, and we're enjoying every single minute."

"I heard that there's over 300 pounds of candy on it, so, that should be fun," he said.

First responders in Rosemont even took a knee and lined the patch, calling the kids their heros.

Year-round fundraising makes the charitable effort possible.
