CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayoral candidate Susana Mendoza is continuing to accuse opponent William Daley of “wilting like a little flower” by skipping Thursday night’s five-candidate televised debate on Fox 32.

Bill Daley did agree to take part in a second Fox 32 debate being recorded, but abruptly pulled out of the first live one, saying he had to go receive the endorsement of the Plumbers Union. Rival Susana Mendoza came to City Hall on Friday to say she sees a pattern.

"He has made a point to not going to as many forums as possible, he doesn't want to see people. He doesn't want pople to see as thin of a skin as he actually has. I mean I have seen a thicker skin on a amoeba," she said.

"Chicago's next mayor needs to have some metal to take on the tough challenges that lie ahead for this city," Mendoza said. "Bill Daley ran and hid from me last night. But as mayor, you can't run and hide from the big challenges our city faces."

Mendoza has also criticized Daley for, in her view, helping to create the old, sometimes criticized, Hispanic Democratic Organization. He denies it.  But opponent Toni Preckwinkle’s campaign is saying Mendoza had long ties to HDO herself.

Meanwhile the Chicago Sun-Times endorsed Lori Lightfoot in this race. Mendoza’s response was gracious and short.

"I'd say congratulations to Lori Lightfoot. I actually have a lot of respect for her."

Daley's campaign manager, Jorge Neri, released a statement in response to Susana Mendoza's action:

"As state comptroller, Susana Mendoza is neglecting the job voters elected her to do,” said Jorge Neri, campaign manager of the Daley for Mayor campaign. “She's campaigning on the taxpayers' dime. She must have seen a new poll that shows her slipping, and decided this publicity stunt could help her gain ground. Since day one, Bill has asked for fair and transparent televised debates with all mayoral candidates. He's participated in debates with Mendoza, as recently as this Wednesday. Bill can't take this request seriously because she's not taking her elected position seriously."
