CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSROOM) -- Eight years after he was shot and killed while attempting to stop a robbery, family, friends and Chicago Police officials gathered to honor a fallen officer Sunday afternoon.

In his time with the department, Chicago Police Officer Clifton Lewis racked up over 80 different awards. He was fatally shot during a grocery store robbery in December 2011, just days before his wedding with Latrice Tucker.

"He never wanted to be looked at or judged like they would judge an officer," she told reporters. "He wanted to be looked at as a person who cared about the community, who would do anything and everything for the community. So if you ever asked Clifton what he did for a living, he would say he worked for the city."

Police Lt. Wilfredo Roman said he lost more than a coworker when Lewis was killed: he lost a friend.

"Cliff lived in this district," Roman said. "As a result of that, I think it hit home for a lot of people. Just the work that he put in here, the embrace he had with the community he served. The tragic passing took everyone for a loop."

At what was named "Honorary Clifton Lewis Way" last year, Chicago police hosted a memorial roll call Sunday afternoon.

"This means the world to us," Tucker said. "He'll never be forgotten."
