CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayoral candidate Willie Wilson went to City Hall Thursday to trumpet polls he says show him in a strong position in the race, and he’s suggesting that Rahm Emanuel leave office now.

Standing outside the mayor’s office, the millionaire businessman noted he’d predicted Emanuel would not stay in the race.

“He needs to just leave out today,” Wilson said.

Wilson pointed to a poll taken for him last week that showed him running second to the incumbent, who’s not running now. Wilson also heralded an independent survey that showed Wilson second to Garry McCarthy; McCarthy released that one.

Wilson admits his charitable giving has also helped give him a higher profile and favorable ratings.

Emanuel announced Tuesday he won't seek a third term in office. The exit of the frontrunner has shifted the political landscape, and newcomers are expected to join an already crowded field of mayoral hopefuls.
