(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The “16-year-old boy” who persuaded a Lake County, Illinois girl to send him nude pictures and videos of herself was actually a Wisconsin man in his 50s who later harassed her, police said Tuesday.

The cyberstalking and child porn case dates back to 2016, when the victim, then a minor, struck up a relationship with someone who claimed to be a boy, 16. The supposed teen boy convinced her to send nude pictures and videos of herself before she stopped communicating with him, Lake County police said in a news release.

In 2019, the former acquaintance threatened the victim and said if she didn’t send additional nude images of herself he would send the existing pictures to her friends and families. When she refused, he made good on his threat.

The victim went to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department late last year. The investigation’s trail led to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Police there helped Illinois authorities get a search warrant, the sheriff’s department said.

On July 1, police searched the home of Howard M. Hickey, 56, who tried to destroy an electronic device, police said.

Hickey was charged with possession of child pornography; distribution of child pornography; felony stalking and obstructing an officer, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department said. He was released from jail in Kenosha after posting $20,000 bond.

“I am proud of the collaboration between our detectives and the Kenosha Police Department to identify and arrest this sexual predator,” Sheriff John Idleburg said in a prepared statement. “I cannot stress it enough, sexual predators lurk online and often pretend to be people they are not.

“Parents, please always check who your children communicate with online and monitor the applications they use.”
