CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Elgin man has been charged in connection with a drug-induced homicide last month.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said members of the county's Anti-Heroin Initiative spent countless hours investigating the death of 25-year old-Trevor Brubaker, who was found dead of an apparent overdose in his St. Charles Township home on April 4.

“Investigators determined that Trevor had met with the suspect and purchased three bags of heroin earlier that day," Hain said. "The lab reports did show that it was heroin mixed with fentanyl."

Jose Charles, 25, has been charged in the case. He's being held on $500,000 bail.

Hain said resources such as medically assisted treatment and counseling in the Kane County Jail are helping in the fight against the deadly epidemic, but it goes far beyond enforcement.

"My investigators are not going to go after the loved one or the friend that comes upon the victim and does everything they can to revive the victim and notify first responders. The ones we're going to go after are our local drug dealers who continue to press their product on our streets."
