(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Donations are being taken on behalf of an Illinois state trooper who was fatally shot last week while serving a search warrant in the St. Louis area.

Trooper Nicholas Hopkins, 33, was struck by gunfire Friday and later died at a hospital. A suspect, Chris Grant, 46, has been charged with first-degree murder in St. Clair County; he’s being held on $5 million bond.

Hopkins was a trooper for a decade. He was married and had three children.

The Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation is accepting donations for the fallen trooper’s family. Donors can earmark their donation by writing Hopkins’ name in the “comments or instructions” box on the donation page. People can also send in donations by mail.
