Man Charged With Dropping Gun That Discharged, Killed Teen Girl

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A man who turned himself into police on Monday had been playing with a gun when it fell, discharged and killed a 17-year-old girl over the weekend in his Bronzeville neighborhood home on the South Side, according to Chicago Police.

Nicholas Holas, 19, was charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of China Lyons-Upshaw, police said.

Lyons-Upshaw was shot in the chest at 9:02 p.m. Saturday at Holas’ home in the 800 block of East 49th Street, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said. Witnesses told officers Holas was playing with the gun when it fell to the ground and discharged.

He ran away after the shooting and was not in custody until he turned himself in on Monday, police said.
