CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Each year around St. Patrick's Day, R. Whittingham and Sons Meats becomes a destination.

Started in 1947, the wholesaler with a retail store was once on Chicago's South Side and is now located in Alsip.

"It's a unique operation. It's not like a regular, local butcher shop. You actually walk into a giant meat locker and we have all the meat out on display," said Rick Whittingham.

Whittingham Meats is known for the corned beef and it's made in Chicago. WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports.

Rick Whittingham's grandfather started the company, but it was his father, he said, who spiced up the corned beef that put the company on the map.

"My father started with about 500,000 pounds back in the 70's when the parades were started back then. We are probably going to do about 40,000 to 50,000 pounds of raw corned beef and maybe another 10,000 - we also do sliced that we offer if you are just doing sandwiches," he said.

It's R. Whittingham and Sons Meats located on 127th Street in Alsip.
