NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Since 1875, Oswald’s Pharmacy has served Naperville -- run by the same family.

“The customer service we have has really kept us going, and each generation has improved on it,” said Bob Anderson, the patriarch of Oswald’s.

The drug store gives Naperville something that big chains such as Walgreen’s and CVS can’t, he said. His son, Bill Anderson, now owns and runs the pharmacy.

“We are our community, we’ve been here so long,” Bill Anderson said.

He said Oswald’s intimately knows the customers and their needs and can advise them about their medication.

“Being able to do that with a patient base I think is a huge differentiator between what we do and what the chains do,” he said.

Many people mistakenly think a family-owned pharmacy isn’t as current as the big chains, he said.

“My dad computerized our pharmacy well ahead of Walgreen’s computerizing their pharmacy,” Bill Anderson said. “We just went through a new software upgrade just this past August.”

Now, he is getting ready to hand over the pharmacy to his son, Alex Anderson. The younger man said knows he has to keep Oswald’s competitive while retaining the community feel.

“There’s always something that we’re changing to keep up with the times and making sure we’re satisfying our customers and our community,” Alex Anderson said.
