CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A dog show could help other dogs find a new home.

A Standard Poodle was named "Best in Show" at this year's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show - a show which draws a lot of attention and features pure bred dogs.

Could that show prompt someone to consider a pure bred over a shelter dog?

Anna Payton with Aurora Animal Control and Care tells WBBM, "I think it's really great to see now, at this point in time, that adopting is very trendy. You see that a lot more with celebrities and anyone in the public eye."

Payton said you might be surprised what you can find at a local shelter.

"There are certainly purebred animals available for adoption at shelters so it shouldn't discredit people or discourage them not to go to a shelter if they think that it's just mutts or mixed breed dogs. There are certainly purepred animals that show up at shelters, as well," she said.

Payton said anyone interested in adopting a dog or cat, can reach out to Aurora Animal Control and Care. They even have a rabbit and chicken available.
