Oak Park Book Store Turns The Final Page

October 21, 2018 - 6:00 am

OAK PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A popular book store in the western suburb of Oak Park is closing its doors for the last time Sunday.

The Magic Tree Book Store on Oak Park Avenue, just south of Lake, has been in business for 34 years. Owner Beth Albrecht tells WBBM Newsradio that while "the community supports this place in so many ways, there just were not enough people coming in and buying books."

Online competition was just too much, she said.

Albrecht said because so many local book stores and other "mom-and-pop" businesses are closing across the U.S., many areas are losing their identity.

The moments she'll miss most are when she saw children fall in love with books, she said.

"We will spend a half-hour with that kid and find the right book, and they walk out of the store –“ Albrecht said, choking up. She continued: “… clutching that book like it's a lifeline for them."

She said the disappearance of book stores hopefully will not mean a further decline in reading.

"If you learn to become someone who loves reading you will never be lonely, you will never be bored.”
